Smelt reduction
Web29 Jul 2024 · The HIsmelt technology actually started its life in the 1980s as part of Germany's efforts to gasify coal to combat the high fuel prices of the time. What ultimately became HIsmelt gasified coal beautifully but the vessel became very hot. To combat that, iron ore was put into it to cool it. WebBy 2030, a full implementation of all measures will have induced a reduction of 25% compared to baseline and of almost 40% compared to 1990. This means that, for example, the carbon intensity of electricity production will have to decrease from 0.42 tCO 2 e/MWh to 0.14 tCO 2 eMWh.

The inventory of hot metal in the hearth always keeps being 42 tones, which means a steady hot metal tapping exits during a stable operating period. Web17 Jun 2024 · HIsarna is a smelting reduction process in which iron ore is directly converted into liquid iron. This technology does not require the preparation of iron ore agglomerates or the production of coke. Without these preparatory steps, the HIsarna process can use the raw materials more economically. It also requires less energy to operate.
