WebDescription. Mary Jane Patterson (1840-1894) was the first black woman to earn a B.A. degree in the United States. She was a graduate of Oberlin College in the class of 1862. The Pattersons were among the many dozens of free black families who had relocated to Oberlin in the 1840s and 1850s so that their children could receive a quality education. WebBorn in 1840 in Raleigh, North Carolina, Mary Jane Patterson was the daughter of Henry Irving Patterson and Emmeline Eliza (Taylor) Patterson. The African American Registry celebrates her birthday as September 12, 1840. Mary Patterson was probably the oldest of at least seven siblings.
